Should a prospective employer ask about your current salary in an interview?

A prospective employer has a right to ask the candidate for salary expectations for the position the candidate is applying for, and the job candidate should be ready to answer this question. Likewise, the prospective employer "should" (and in some states, must) be transparent regarding the amount they are willing to pay, for the position they are advertising.
The candidate's previous role could be vastly different than the role they are applying for, so asking for current salary is, at best a little tacky, and at worst, misleading.
